It’s great when you know someone with a van, isn’t it? Whether you’re moving home, setting up a new business, or simply need to move some possessions from A to B, that person becomes your knight in shining armour.

But what if you don’t know someone with a van? Similarly, what if you do but you’ve already asked for one too many favours?

This is where van rental comes in. It’s more cost effective than you might think and is the friend you need when your car won’t fit the bill.

But, what if you need to travel long distance? Should you expect any restrictions?

How many miles can you put on a rental van?

The answer to this question lies entirely with the rental company in question. It’ll be down to their policy when it comes to how many miles are allowed.

The good news? Most rental companies don’t put a limit on the number of miles you can travel in their vehicles. They’re there to be driven, after all.

The bad news? Some will charge you extra for the privilege, so you need to know what to look out for.

Look for an unlimited mileage policy?

There’s a simple solution to this: always look for an unlimited mileage policy when hiring a van – particularly if you need to travel a long distance.

Unlimited mileage policies enable renters to take hire vehicles as far and wide as they wish, across the rental period.

There are, however, usually a couple of things to bear in mind. In order to avoid any additional charges from the rental company, you’ll need to:

  • refill the van’s fuel tank to the brim (that’s usually the policy after you’ve finished using it); and
  • return the van in the same condition.

Neither request is unreasonable, and shouldn’t be an issue if you’re a conscientious rental customer. Which, of course, you are.

Other myths about van rental

It’s fair to say that limited mileage on rental vans is a bit of a myth. And there are lots more to be aware of, too.

Here are five of our ‘favourite’ (for want of a better word) myths about van rental.

  1. You’ll always pay for small damage

This isn’t always the case. If the damage is nothing more than a stone chip or slight scuffing of a wheel, most reasonable rental firms will give you the benefit of the doubt.

  1. All rental companies are the same

They really aren’t. The best rental firms aren’t ‘out to get you’ or fond of pointless red tape; most are entirely reasonable, friendly and want nothing more than to provide a great rental van at a cost-effective price.

  1. You can get away with anything – it’s not your van

Not true. Any naughtiness which takes place while you’re in charge of the van will land on your shoulders, because traffic offences rest with the driver, always.

  1. The bigger the rental company, the better

Not necessarily. Like all things in life, large companies aren’t always a safer bet. In fact, small to medium sized van rental firms will probably provide a better service and be much easier to work with.

  1. Rental vans are super-expensive

Just because they’re bigger vehicles than cars, it doesn’t mean vans are more expensive to rent. In fact, if you choose the right rental firm, you’ll be amazed by how affordable it is.

So, now you know that you really can take a rental van pretty much anywhere you like, and we’ve busted some common myths.
